The Lady's Not For Sale

I picked up an album today.  I am ashamed to say I did not know of Rita Coolidge but who could pass up this album cover?

Whilst crafting I decided to give Rita a spin.  Upon opening the album cover I found the following written in the lower right hand corner:

She ain't ashamed to show her soul;
Why, she'll sell it for a song;
But free don't mean she's easy;
Or right for going wrong.

So let her be the lady, Lord;
She wants so bad to be;
And let her win the gentle man;
That she was born to please.
-Lyrics by Kris Kristofferson & Carol Pugh

Just an Old Fashioned Love Song

Happy Valentine's Day Fete-ish-istas!  In honor of the day I am going to share my
Top Ten Love Songs in no particular order....
  1. San Antonio Rose by Bob Wills-A classic which inspires a two-step along the banks of the San Antonio River straight over to The Alamo with a spin on back to The Buckhorn!
  2. I Guess I've Come To Live Here in Your Eyes by Willie Nelson-SIGH!  "...this may be the place called paradise...a thousand times I see you and a thousand times you take my breath away."  Need I say more?
  3. Crazy Love by Van Morrison-He can "hear her heart beat from a thousand miles."  Seriously?  Just revive me now.
  4. If I Had The World to Give by The Grateful Dead-I have loved this song since college.  It isn't terribly well known; but the lyrics are thoughtful and the sentiment feels achingly honest..."Only if you let me be your world, could I ever give this world to you.  But I will give what love I have to give as long as I live."
  5. Cinnamon Girl by Neil Young-This song just makes me happy.  I imagine Neil longing for a waifishly thin, long haired woman as she bakes bread in their kitchen with a loud, squeaky porch door...out on their farm.  She loves to "chase the moonlight" and is a "dreamer of pictures" in addition to being an accomplished pastry chef!
  6. When It Don't Come Easy by Patty Griffin-A rugged tumble through an aged love story.  "Everywhere the waters gettin' rough.  Your best intentions may not be enough.  But if you break down, I'll drive out and find you.  If you forget my love, I'll try to remind you.  Stay by you, when it don't come easy...."  The is an ode to the "little relationship that could."
  7. Let's Stay Together by Al Green-This song warms my heart and every time I hear it I smile and remember Ryan and Ciara's first dance as a married couple...and I have hope!
  8. There She Goes by The La's-Sooooooooo many reasons this is an all time favorite.  First, it reminds me of sitting in Lauren's 4-Runner my junior year in high school after a UIL Journalism competition.  Second, this guy can't "contain" this feeling "that remains" after "she" (whoever she is) merely brushes by him.  Finally, and perhaps, most importantly, it is the first sound EVER-even before Lorelai utters her first words-you hear at the beginning of the ENTIRE Gilmore Girls series.
  9. Misguided Angel by The Cowboy Junkies-Talk about CAAAARAAAAZY love for THE ULTIMATE BAD BOY!  She is convincing her family that she loves a man who is clearly wrong for her...wrong for any woman...but she SWEARS she is going to love him "until I am dead."  Which...unfortunately she probably dies an early death from all the pain he put her through considering she says his "soul's like Lucifer...black and cold like a piece of lead."  Seriously, chick?  You really want to marry this dude?  (Who am I to judge...glass houses!)
  10. Doe Eyes: Love Theme from The Bridges of Madison County by Lennie Niehaus-This song has no words.  It doesn't need any.  Yet, pure, adult, real, breath-taking love reaches out at me and I remember why I understood their affair and why I wished for a different ending to the story.  And yes, so it was composed by Clint Eastwood who has now taken to speaking to empty chairs...BUT...IF there is ever an aisle to walk down with my daddy...this is what I choose...and I've know it for 18 years.

Here's hoping your day was filled with love, joy, laughter and most importantly, music!

Be The Earth

Monday through Thursday are a blur.  I don't know why, but I am having to work really hard to remember anything about the beginning of this week.  The one exception is the amazing time I had at Meg and Justin's house on Monday evening.

As we know Thursday rolled around and I was emoting and finding my compassion compass, again.

Friday isn't terribly clear, either.  I remember what I wore and that I was late for work so I took my makeup bag to work and applied a quick face before I had to "face" any of my co-workers.  There were a lot of meetings and I was on auto-pilot.  Information overload.  I sat in the back and journaled.  I WAS LISTENING...it's just I am an excellent multi-tasker.

Upon arriving home I switched on the local news.  I RARELY do this as it is mostly just sad.  I saw the "first" student I ever really connected with (14 years ago) being hauled into jail for calling in a bomb threat at the airport.  That was the breaking point.  His mug shot, his image, his story...I couldn't handle it.  I broke down.  I called my mom.  My dad brought me fajita tacos.  I curled up in bed and cried.  Even Mary didn't like me.  She refused to cuddle with me and kept giving me the butt end of her body. Nice, right?  I realize, at this point, I have left my make up at work.  Thankfully it is the ONE Saturday out of the school year the school will be open.

Saturday morning I woke up two hours late.  I left the house with wet hair and arrived on campus to put make up on, introduce myself to my classroom neighbor (who was diligently working...legitimately working...unlike me) and made a quick trip to Barnes and Noble to purchase Najla and Kamilah birthday gifts.

I can BARELY keep it together in the children's book section.  Why?  Who knows.  At this point if someone breathes wrong I am liable to shed tears.

With little time to waste I am annoyed by the "wait" at the check out counter.  I place my purchases down.   I am "coyly" checking out this issue of US Weekly when I hear the man checking me out let out a noise of frustration and annoyance.  He looks at me and says, "The computer just kicked me out of the system."  Jokingly, I replied, "Oh...I was wondering what I had done to offend you."  And I laugh.

He says, "I am never offended."

I say, "Oh yeah.  I guess I don't offend easily, either.  Instead I just get hurt.  That's my problem."

He says, "I am Buddhist." (I knew this...he was dripping in the beads of his beliefs...but in a really lovely manner.)

He goes on to say, "The Buddha told his son, 'When you are feeling upset, sad, etc. just be the earth.'  So I tell myself, 'Be the earth,' if I am feeling offended."

"The earth?  Why the earth?  Tell me about that."

(A huge line is forming behind me but I don't care at this moment.)

"Yes, the earth.  Think about what we do to the earth.  We urinate on it.  We defecate on it.  We vomit on it.  We treat it poorly.  Yet we can plant a tree in it and treat it well.  The earth knows no difference.  It just 'is,'."

Crickets from my side of the counter.

"Would you like your items in a bag?"

"Yes, please."

Huge score at Half Price Books today.  (Yes...I am always in a book store or around books or on Amazon.  It's a disease, I tell you!)

Still in shrink wrap...I don't care that this costs 30 dollars.  I am listening as I type and I feel really smart and really cool and like this moment belongs in a movie.
In loving memory of Michael Roman Morales.  Happy Birthday to my angel with really big wings!

Tell Me Why

Sometimes the last moments you spend with someone are the most meaningful.  This song IS the last meaningful moment I spent with someone.  We marveled at the writing.

For me it was the line about "Is it hard to make arrangements with yourself?"

For the other person it was, "I am lonely, but you can free me, all in the way that you smile."

Sadly, in that moment, I knew my smile was not the smile that person was thinking could free them. It hurt, but I held my head high in dignity, regardless.

We sat in silence at the poetry and the beauty of the lyrics.  The person I shared this with admitted this song had saved them through a very lonely period in life.

I felt honored to know that.  I still feel honored to know this.

I never saw that person again.

Sailing heart-ships
through broken harbors
Out on the waves in the night.
Still the searcher
must ride the dark horse.
Racing alone in his fright.

Tell me why, tell me why
Is it hard to make
arrangements with yourself,
When you're old enough to repay
but young enough to sell?

Tell me lies later,
come and see me
I'll be around for a while.
I am lonely but you can free me
All in the way that you smile.

Tell me why, tell me why
Is it hard to make
arrangements with yourself,
When you're old enough to repay
but young enough to sell?

-Neil Young

Merle=Time for Bed

I am too tired to pretend.  I am too tired to be smiley.  Merle is on.  40 greatest Merle hits....this one hits me particularly this evening.  I am looking for one song in particular and I can't find it.  I'll find it one day and listen to it 25 times before bed....

Admitting you're to blame won't heal my wounded pride.  It's too late to be ashamed, I've already stepped aside.  Just let me live again and please don't come around.  If you never loved me then.  You'll never love me now.

You fooled me all the way.  Each time you held me tight.  But when darkness turned to day, then I finally saw the light.  When I really needed you, that's when you let me down.  If you never love me then, you'll never love me now.

Just let me live again and please don't come around.  If you never loved me then, you'll never love me now.

-Merle Haggard

Amazing stuff....amazing.  Remember friends, when Merle comes on...it's time for bed.

By the way...last night Loretta told us she and Merle and working on a collaboration.  Classic history at it's finest.

This One is All About the Ladies

Hang on to your hats, friends.  This one is going to be a long one.

This week has been a challenge; both physically and mentally.  Despite my present discomfort God....(and The Universe) have sent me a number of gifts that I would like to share with you, my readership of less than 100!  Granted, I have shared most of this on Facebook.  But, in the very rare and troubling event that YOU are not on Facebook...allow me to share these precious little gems of goodness and grace.

 Little known fact:  I am the Research and Communications Liaison for Monarch Media Productions.

Who knew that?

Had I mentioned it?  This brain is 100% on overload.

Well, I am.  And proudly so!

Today, Monarch Media Productions launched the trailer for Sweet Mary & Jane.
Why is Monarch Media Productions relevant, diverse, ground breaking and just plain bad a**?

Well...it was created by Marisa Quinn, my "little"...but more importantly Monarch Media Productions is driven by a singular mission:

 "By challenging traditional stereotypes within all races, cultures, and lifestyles portrayed in Film, Television, and New Media, Monarch Media Productions is committed to generating innovative content that will seek to honorably represent and realistically portray the rich diversity of modern American society."-www.monarchmediaproductions.com

Take a look at the trailer for Sweet Mary & Jane....
I am so proud of all the individuals who came together to make this possible.  Now...on with the show. Chat at me about film festivals!
 I am "literally" loving Kat Edmonson's new album, Way Down Low!  A fellow Texan, which makes me love her even MORE, I was first introduced to Kat Edmonson when she teamed up with, my man, Lyle Lovett on three Christmas songs.  Her voice is a perfect mix of pixie quirk and throwback hauntings.  I love the vibe of this album and feel inspired to bathe in vintage and take myself out for a Sidecar, Slow Gin Fizz or a classic Martini.  BUY IT, NOW!
 I have been unable to face scouring my house...for one reason or another.  I never really got to the source of the fear and blockage...but I honestly didn't delve all that deeply into the root cause.  Perhaps because I was afraid of what I might find.

Domestic Divas told me it was okay to leave "the dust to them."  And so, I took them up on their offer! According to their founder, Nikki Jefferson, it is okay to feel like I can't possibly keep up with the demands of my life AND keep a clean house.  Of course, what Nikki does not know is that I have no children and no husband.  I live alone and have no excuse....other than pure laziness....for not cleaning this house on my own.

Thank you, Nikki, for your understanding nature!  It is not lost on me.  And...good for you for finding your niche!  I HIGHLY recommend Domestic Divas.

For information about menu and pricing visit www.domesticdivas.net.  Let them know I referred you, pretty please!

HOLY MOTHER OF PEARL:  I do not even know where to start on HOW MUCH I found this blog a source of total comfort this week.  I am not even going to try!  Just go to www.momastery.com.

Yes, this is a "mommy blog" and NO, I am not a "mommy."  But...that does not mean Glennon's story did not completely resonate with me, inspire me, break me down, build me up.  I experienced a range of emotions while I navigated through this lovely "e-space," meeting up with like minded individuals along the way.  It is a forum for "yourself-ness" and thank you Glennon for allowing a space like this to exist!  I love, love, love when God uses the internet for His good graciousness.  THIS is one of those places.  Go there...NOW!  And...become a "monkee!"
Rory: Wait.  Where are you going?
Lorelai: I am gonna drive in a circle really fast to reverse the earth's orbit.

Ahhhh.....I feel much better now!  Much, much, much love....
